About T Denne & Sons

Founded in 1879 by Thomas Denne, a member of the family who had previously farmed in Kent for over two hundred years, the family-owned company has expanded and diversified over the past one hundred and thirty five years with the fifth generation of the family now actively involved in the management.

Thomas Denne originally purchased the City Flour Mill, known as Abbotts Mill, a building in the middle of Canterbury second in size only to the Cathedral, supplying flour to the baking industry. Later the business expanded to processing farmers' grain and supplying animal feed to farmers and the cavalry barracks to feed their hundreds of horses.

When his two sons joined the business the Company further expansion took place with the acquisition of two windmills at Barham and Willesborough and a water mill at Chartham. The Company became a limited company in 1913. Following the First World War and the demobilisation of his younger son, the Company acquired the water mill in Wye.

The three members of the third generation of the family joined the Company in 1930s. Continued expansion through the 1930s saw the Company become the leading agricultural merchant in Kent, buying, selling and storing grain, supplying seed and other farm inputs. Following the end of the Second World War and the demobilisation of the three members of the third generation, it expanded further with the acquisition of companies and properties in Kent.

The four members of the fourth generation joined the Company in 1960s and 1970s. The Company continued to expand with further acquisitions, including M. Hancock & Son Ltd based at Mersham, an old-established merchanting business. The Company moved the seed division to Mersham specialising in the production and processing of all types of agricultural seeds.

With the fifth generation of the family now taking an active role, the Company continues to look to the future for further expansion of the core business of agriculture as well as property letting and storage, recycling and Caribbean yacht charter.
